Europe and Asia are connected at a depth of 60 meters under the Bosporus by means of the Marmaray. The project to link Asia and Europe under the sea was first dreamt of by Sultan Abdulmecid, and the first sketches were made during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II. Marmaray’s groundbreaking ceremony was held in 2004, and its first stage was completed on Oct. 29, 2013, the 90th anniversary of the republic. Marmaray trains will run every five minutes during peak hours along the 13.6-kilometer-long line.
